College - University of Florida

The University of Florida is a public college and land-grant institution situated in Gainesville, Florida. It's currently the fourth largest university in the United States with 49,693 pupils accompanied by the largest funding. A prominent academic faculty, University of Florida ranks 1st in the country and 16th among all public colleges nationwide. Recognized as one of the Public Ivies and a part of the Association of American Universities, the faculty is ranked 57th among the world's top 500 universities.


Although the university claims to be founded in 1853, the campus which exists now in Gainesville was actually founded in 1905. The Buckman Act established the present University of Florida by removing funding for existing educational institutions, such as the University of Florida at Lake City, the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, the St. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School in St. Petersburg and the South Florida Military College at Bartow. The first classes started on September 26, 1906, on the new campus that was built in Gainesville. The alligator was chosen as the universities mascot at 1911. The Buckman Act also established the University of Florida as the only public college in Florida for white males. Registration for females began in 1947 along with the registration for African American students started in 1958.

The University of Florida is divided into 16 colleges, which provide 100 undergraduate majors and 200 graduate degrees, including the sole dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary drug plans offered publicly in the state. The acceptance rate at the college has gone downward because of the applicants getting more aggressive. Undergraduate tuition for Florida residents is around $120 each credit-hour, although it is $520 per credit-hour for out-of-state pupils, using a normal accumulation of 30 credits per year. The Freshman Class of 2005 rated number one in the country in terms of National Merit enrollment, registering more National Merit Scholars than any other university. A full tuition academic scholarship is awarded to each of National Merit Scholars admitted to college. The Honors program lasts for a student's first two decades, but Honors software services and classes remain available to upperclassmen. The college was 13th among universities private and public in the number of U.S. Patents awarded in 2000.

Florida dedicates roughly $44 million annually to its sports facilities and teams.
